Sometimes, I think the soldiers who gave their lives in war have a way of ensuring they’re not forgotten.
Call it coincidence or perhaps a bit of divine intervention, but today, Edward Augustus Cash found his way into my research. I had somehow missed him while preparing for ANZAC Day—and yet here he is, quietly reminding me that he was there too.
Edward served with the Auckland Infantry Battalion during World War I and was killed at the Somme in 1916. He was just 34 years old—a husband, a son, a New Zealander—and a name that deserves to be remembered.
Today, I honour you, Edward, half-first cousin to my grandmother, Annie Norma Cripps nee Lymburner.
Lest we forget.
