It was super sleuthing. and a path that was educational for sure. Now Mervyn will live in me too, although I am not related. But he was one of ours....
Tough details to preserve as the real story; given what family had previously been told! Your detective work on this is a satisfying achievement. Your storytelling superb, as usual!
Love the way you have given us a taster here and an enticement to read the full story on WeAre.xyz.
I’m glad I was able to find out what really happened. At least some of the family that are left will know the truth now. I’ve just put the records through NotebookLM and it produced some amazing slides.
And AI was fantastic in pulling the information together. Questioning a few of the details, hence it taking a bit to pull it all together as I went down lots of rabbit holes and came back with the goods. Perplexity found that German burial record. I was pretty chuffed with that.
It surprising the family weren't told the detail of why he was shot given that attempting to escape was considered an honorable thing to do, I believe.
Oh that's interesting. I hadn't known that. I wonder if there are more records out there, especially as it was considered a war crime. Something might turn up. I'd like to contact the Kipping family and see if they know what happened to their relative.
A sad end to a young life. Excellent research on your part to uncover the true story. I looked at all the articles you have under his name, such a comprehensive coverage, well done!
Thanks Carmel. It took a bit of super sleuthing to find some of those. The big surprise for me was when I saw Horace Kipping tried to escape as well and now are side by side in the cemetery.

Perhaps you'll include those slides in your story? Love to see those.
I’ve just added them to Mervyn’s profile. I thought I had enough images on the story page so I’ve chose to add them as stand alone.
